This October The Hong Kong Ballet presents a mixed bill programme in celebration of the Company’s 35th anniversary. With the box office due to open on 22nd August, Artistic Director Madeleine Onne spoke about this landmark show. “I’m so proud of the exceptional level that The Hong Kong Ballet has reached in 35 years, and this mixed bill really highlights the unique characteristics of our international troupe. I hope that audience members old and new will join us for a show that epitomizes all that we stand for.”

Throughout its history the Company has presented works by some of the most famous choreographers of all time, some of whom are featured here including the father of neo-classical ballet George Balanchine, one of today’s foremost choreographers Spanish-born Nacho Duato, as well as classical ballet’s most prolific choreographer Marius Petipa. The trio of ballets featured in A Celebration of Dance – The Hong Kong Ballet at 35 represents the Company’s greatest strengths; a unique repertoire, remarkably talented dancers, and a dedication to the heritage of ballet, while still looking to the future.

The first piece is a perfect showcase for The Hong Kong Ballet’s ensemble of technically exceptional women. George Balanchine’s Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance; it is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature works of New York City Ballet’s repertoire. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in blue costumes in front of a blue background. Originating it as a lesson in stage technique, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the choreography. When one student fell, he incorporated it. Another day, a student arrived late, and this too became part of the ballet.

The focus shifts as The Hong Kong Ballet’s outstandingly talented men take the stage. Set to a blend of Vivaldi’s and Karl Jenkins’ richly structured music, Nacho Duato’s Castrati is a deeply affecting, powerful piece for nine men. The perfectly constructed ballet explores the meaning of masculinity and the significance of sacrifice in a world that demands perfection; the South China Morning Post’s Natasha Rogai agreed, adding that “Duato's choreography combines strong movement with an androgynous quality as disquieting as it is distinctive.” Castrati is hugely popular with audiences, starting quietly but building up to a punchy climax. The Hong Kong Ballet was the first company in Asia to perform this eloquent piece.

The show wraps up with the perfect expression of The Hong Kong Ballet’s devotion to the legendary classics of the ballet world; the most exciting act of the world’s favourite ballet Swan Lake. The Queen urges Prince Siegfried to choose a bride from the princesses dancing for him; but he cannot stop thinking of the White Swan Odette. As the festivities continue, trumpets announce the arrival of the Black Swan Odile, who has been enchanted by the evil von Rothbart to look like Odette. As part of our ongoing friendly exchange with the Royal Swedish Ballet, we present Act III of their version of Swan Lake, choreographed by Natalia Conus (after Marius Petipa).
